Georgia Cup Has Grown From Intimate Club Event To Unique Amateur Championship Known On Both Sides Of The Atlantic
Established at The Golf Club of Georgia in 1998, The Georgia Cup annually brings together the reigning United States Amateur and British Amateur Champion for an 18-hole match in advance of the Masters.
Televised by Comcast Sports Southeast, The Georgia Cup has grown from an intimate Club event to a unique amateur championship known on both sides of the Atlantic.
United States Amateur Champion Peter Uihlein of Oklahoma State emerged as the 2011 Georgia Cup Champion, defeating British Amateur Champion Jin Jeong of Australia, 4 & 2, on the Lakeside Course.
The Georgia Cup All-Time Series stands at 8-6 in favor of the United States Amateur Champions following Uihlein's victory. It was the fourth win in five years for the U.S.
The 2011 Georgia Cup Honorary Captain was Matt Kuchar, the PGA Tour's leading money winner in 2010 and the Inaugural Georgia Cup Champion in 1998.
The Georgia Cup is open to the public for a donation to one of our two charities, the Folds of Honor Foundation and the Georgia State Golf Foundation.
Played the day before The Georgia Cup every year is The Georgia Cup Sponsor Classic, which is contested on both the Lakeside and Creekside Courses. That same evening is The Georgia Cup Charity Dinner & Auction, which also benefits the GSGF, and in recent years has been co-hosted by members Matt Kuchar, the 1997 U.S. Amateur Champion and first Georgia Cup champion, and former NBA star Brad Daugherty.
From 1998 to the present, The Golf Club of Georgia has developed a reputation with The Georgia Cup competitors as the gold standard of hospitality and golf's purest traditions. The Georgia Cup competitors and Honorary Captains all become Lifetime Honorary Members of The Golf Club of Georgia and are guests of the Club during Georgia Cup week.
The Golf Club of Georgia is also home to The United States Collegiate Championship, which began in 2006.
The Georgia Cup started in 1998, with Kuchar, who played collegiately at Georgia Tech, defeating British Amateur champion Craig Watson, 3 & 1. Other Georgia Cup champions have included Sergio Garcia, Ryan Moore, David Gossett, Ricky Barnes and Richie Ramsay.
The Georgia Cup presents a special opportunity for galleries attending at The Golf Club of Georgia. In the spirit and intimacy of the Walker Cup matches, fans can walk with the players, unhindered by gallery ropes, enjoying a unique perspective.
The Golf Club of Georgia is a 36-hole, member-owned, private club featuring championship course conditions year-round on its two Arthur Hills-designed courses, Lakeside and Creekside.
Lakeside was named Golf Digest's “Best New Private Course” in 1991.
