In just a few years, The United States Collegiate Championship
has earned a proud reputation as 'the Masters of college golf'
The United States Collegiate Championship, hosted by Georgia Tech, annually brings 15 of the nation's top college teams to The Golf Club of Georgia for a three-day, 54-hole event that already is being called "the Masters of college golf".
The 2009 USCC will be held April 5-7 on The Golf Club of Georgia's award-winning Lakeside Course, with the following teams competing: Georgia Tech, Georgia, Southern Cal, UCLA, Stanford, Oklahoma State, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Texas A&M, East Tennessee State, Alabama, Indiana, South Carolina and Washington.
Started in 2006, the USCC offers PGA Tour-type, championship conditions for the nation's finest college players, including a personal caddie for all three rounds. Long pants are required and galleries are able to walk in the fairways behind the players, similar to the Walker Cup.
The USCC crowns a Team Champion and Individual Champion, which are honored on the Club's perpetual mahogany, gold and crystal trophy. Team champions have been Clemson (2006), Georgia (2007) and Southern California (2008). Individual titles have gone to Clemson's Stephen Poole (2006), Wake Forest's Webb Simpson (2007) and Oklahoma State's Trent Leon (2008).
With 9 of the top 11 teams from the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings competing in 2008, Southern Cal won the team title by three shots over UCLA at even-par 864. OSU's Leon managed his first college victory by one stroke over teammate Rickie Fowler. The field contained 16 of the top 20 ranked individuals.
The USCC's primary 2008 sponsors were Callaway Golf, Siemens, Cadillac, Textron Financial, Cisco and Aspen University. The tournament is televised by Comcast Sports Southeast.
